Our Process

Here is our 6-step process for implementing, funding and growing a Microfinance Club at your school.

Step 1: Create and advertise club

Yes, it's an obvious step. But we want to emphasize a few things here. Within your advertisements, mention a few quick details on the cause itself; make it clear it is philanthropic and not business-based. Also, present microfinance as a very unique way to make a global, positive impact.

Step 2: Connect with Kiva

Kiva is the most well-known and largest Microfinance platform out there. Sign up for an account at kiva.org, and they make it very simple to start loaning immediately. The other nice thing about Kiva is that it keeps track of your loans so you can see your history as you go.

Step 3: Establish meeting protocol

There are many different ways to run a microfinance meeting, and of course, feel free to get creative here. Press on Read More to get more in-depth on how we run our meetings, but we suggest having a basic present-vote-loan meeting with occasional fundraising meetings to keep it fresh.

Make it entertaining!

We have had the best results growing our club when we make it fun. For example, we filmed a video asking random people on the streets if they knew what microfinance was, and turned it into a funny video for a meeting, and one that we could share across the school to bring more attention to the club.

Get the people involved

The members will want a stake in the club, so give it them. Whether it be members presenting possible loan recipients or voting on them, give them an opportunity to have a voice and get involved.

Two Quick Tips!

Step 4: Educate about Microfinance

It is critical, especially for the first few meetings, to educate members about microfinance's process and impact. This can take many different forms, from creating entertaining videos to bringing in guest speakers to explain.

Step 5: Fundraise!

Fundraising is critical for amplifying the impact of microfinance and your loans. The more creative, the better when it comes to fundraising. Things like Chipotle or other restaurant fundraisers are very easy, but bring in little money. As you grow, get more creative with your fundraisers; for example, we are hosting a Fair Trade Fair in October where we charge Fair Trade vendors to sell goods at our school.

Step 6: Connect and Grow

At this point, you're at a pretty good place. But what's the fun in stopping there? Get connected with other clubs and groups at your school or beyond (NHSMC is a great resource) to expand your impact. Try new events and fundraisers as well to bring more attention to the cause.
